Mandrake: home, safe, wobbly
Mandrake made a quick recovery from the anaesthetic and so the vet told us, when we turned up to pay the bill and see how our wee friend was, that we could take him home.
We’re very happy to have our three-legged ginger beast curled up right now in his bed in front of the fire, wrapped in his favourite blue blanket and being visited every few minutes or so by one or another of his curious feline kin.
He’s not feeling much of anything after two jabs—one antibiotics, one painkillers—but clearly he’s in shock as he’s a bit cold and shivery. The other cats I wasn’t prepared for them being shocked, but they are. You can almost see the one question behind all their eyes: what happened to his leg?
The pics (and descriptive) below are not for the squeamish….
You have been warned.
Okay…
The vet explained that he took the whole leg from the hip, leaving a ’sleeve’ that is tied at the end. Grim, I know, but this means he won’t have visible scarring and his hair will grow over seamlessly. Now Mandrake has to go back in two days for a check-up, then his stitches will be out in another eight days. He has to wear a buster collar to prevent nibbling at his stitches but, for the next 24 hours or more, I don’t think we need do anything other than keep him fed, watered and comfortable. He can’t walk but he tries to hop, and falls over when he does so the more he lies down and goes to sleep, the less stressed his owners will be about him doing injury to himself. Still, he’s doing well. It’s only been a few hours since he said goodbye to his leg.
He’s home. He’s alive. We can deal with whatever comes. Thanks to everyone for the support, it is very much appreciated!
